Car Buying Tips

When you are looking to buy a car don't pay attention to all of the negative hype about car salespeople. They are just people trying to make a living just like everybody else.

A good car salesperson can actually save you money by getting you in contact with the most ideal vehicle to suit your needs. He/she is literally your friend in the business. I was a car salesman for a few years and it was frustrating to me when the buyers would come in on the defensive because of something that they read or saw on TV.

As a car salesperson I was trained to help a car buyer find the ideal vehicle for their needs and not to oversell anyone, but that only works when the customer is truthful. Payment is important but it shouldn't be the end all in your auto purchase. Some people would come in to the dealership and say that I only want to pay "X" number of dollars a month for a car, they never said what type of car, just a car.

That left it up to me to find a vehicle that would fit their payment requirements and not their vehicle needs. When I tried asking questions about the type of vehicle they were looking for they got defensive and said something that will fit our payment plan.

That is a good idea to know what you want as far as payment goes, but you need to consider the vehicle type and your needs and look accordingly and that can only be done if you, at least, try to give the salesman the benefit of the doubt.

Your car salesperson has many duties and responsibilities that must be finished once you drive off of the lot in your new vehicle. It is the salespersons job to see that your paperwork, and there is a lot, gets filed where it is supposed to be so your financing goes through on time and they are responsible to make sure that your insurance has been switched to your new vehicle. They are not paid for this extra service, they only make a small commission from the vehicle that they sell and no more. Most car salesmen I worked with couldn't even afford to buy the base model of the vehicle that they are selling because so many customers demand to buy a vehicle below invoice thus cutting all of the profit and any commission the salesperson may have made. So if you buy a car and need to go back to the dealership for some reason and need your salesperson to help you don't be surprised if they no longer work at the dealership. No one can work for nothing for very long.
